Common Hormone Imbalances + Their Symptoms
Do you struggle with your period every month?
..A period that won’t stop, a period that comes and goes whenever it pleases with no regularity, a period that’s painful, way too heavy, extremely light, or a period that has gone completely MIA altogether?.. Maybe you even have nasty PMS, bloating, mood swings, acne, spotting, breast tenderness, fibroids, fluid retention, or extremely low libido..
If you feel any of these not-so-fun symptoms, you are most likely asking yourself.. WHAT’S GOING ON WITH MY HORMONES?!
In this article I am going to share with you a few of the most common imbalances and how they might show up in your period symptoms.
Before we go any deeper, I want to address a few myths that have become normal for many women..
You may have also previously been told that these period + hormonal symptoms you experience are “normal”. I want to remind you that the symptoms you are feeling are MESSAGES from your body- they are simply your body’s way of communicating with you. Period problems are COMMON but they aren’t NORMAL. The symptoms you are experiencing don’t have to be the norm for you, or any woman.
You may have also been told that the only solution is a prescribed form of birth control (IUD’s, hormonal contraceptive pills, hormonal ring, etc.) Prescribed forms of synthetic hormones can work well for managing and reducing symptoms in the short term.. BUT they are only masking that underlying root cause. This means that while your symptoms/ messages from your body are being suppressed, imbalances are still manifesting below the surface. This can lead to more extreme imbalances, and even disease progression.
Instead of suppressing, ignoring, and “pushing through” those symptoms each month, it’s time to start LISTENING. Your period is like a monthly report card from your body.. What message is your body trying to send you?
**NOTE** - There are a large number of period problems / hormonal imbalances that can occur. These can show up differently in every body and can happen for a variety of different reasons. It’s extremely important to get to the root cause of what’s going on in YOUR body so you can successfully implement a personalized healing strategy. My 1:1 Nourished Hormones Protocol and Functional Testing Packages can support you.
5 Common Hormone Imbalances + POSSIBLE Symptoms
Hypothyroidism / Low Thyroid
The number one symptom I see (that is often being dismissed) in hypothyroidism / thyroid disease is long periods and excessive amounts of bleeding. Along with this you might also experience:
Extreme fatigue
Always feeling cold
Constipation/ difficult bowel movements
Depression
Mental sluggishness
Headaches
Difficulty losing weight / gaining weight easily
Dry/ itchy skin
2. Excess Estrogen
Excess estrogen has many root causes that need to be factored in. Here are some of the symptoms you might experience:
Heavy period with lots of clots
Painful periods
Long periods (longer than 7 days)
Breast tenderness / fibrocystic breasts
Fibroids
Premenstrual / menstrual headaches or migraines
Premenstrual water retention / bloating / puffiness
Extreme mood changes / depression / irritability before or during your period
3. Low Estrogen
Low estrogen is especially common in over-worked, under-nourished women. If you are living in “survival mode” you might experience the following:
Light periods
Irregular periods
Short periods - less than 4 days
Missing periods
Vaginal dryness
Low libido
Chronic UTI’s
Fertility struggles
High stress
Nutrient absorption disorders
Brain fog / memory challenges
Depression
4. Excess Androgens
This is commonly seen in women who struggle with androgen related PCOS. Women still NEED androgens but balance is always key. With this imbalance you may experience:
Oil skin
Acne
Irregular periods
Hair loss/ thinning
Hair growth on face
Infertility
Irritated / angry moods
Increased body odor
Cycles longer than 35 days
Blood sugar issues
5. Low Progesterone
Progesterone is your happy + calm hormone.. You can image what you feel like when you don’t have enough! Here are some things you may feel with low progesterone levels:
Irritable / moody
Anxious - especially before your period comes
Spotting before your period
Brown / rusty colored period
Irregular cycles
High stress
Overwhelm
Poor sleep
Miscarriages
As you can see many of these imbalances have common symptoms. Your hormones work in harmony with one another.. similar to an orchestra. This means when one hormone is out of whack, the rest will also be affected. It’s always important to discover exactly what imbalances are taking place in YOUR situation.
What to do next?
Balancing your hormones requires an individualized plan of action according to YOUR root cause. To discover the full imbalances taking place in your body and their root causes, it will be important to work with a professional in a 1:1 setting and investigate deeper with functional testing if needed.
