How to Detox Holistically for Hormone Balance

Detoxification is crucial for overall health. But it also plays a HUGE role in your hormone health.

Poor detoxification has become a problem in today’s world because our poor bodies are constantly being bombarded with toxins and chemicals. Toxins are mainly ingested through our lungs, skin, and digestive system. This means we can accumulate toxins through the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the personal care products we use!

We obviously cannot control the air we breathe or even our exposure to environmental components but we CAN control what we put in our bodies, onto our bodies, and how much we SUPPORT our bodies through its natural detox functions.

Think of it this way.. If your detox pathways are clogged up or your organs of elimination are sluggish, the toxins that should be moved OUT of the body are instead being RE-CIRCULATED INTO the body.

So how does an overload of toxins circulating in the body impact your hormones?

Many of these toxins act as endocrine disruptors or Xenoestrogens. This means they actually have the ability to alter hormonal function. For example, xenoestrogens, commonly found in processed foods and personal care products, mimic your body’s natural estrogen and can result in further estrogen dominance symptoms (heavy periods, pms, painful periods, breast tenderness, fibroids, etc.).

When elimination pathways are functioning optimally your body can do an incredible job of getting rid of these excess toxins and no problems arise. BUT.. when your body is constantly overloaded (processed foods, poor diet, environmental toxins, stress, inflammatory oils, personal-care / cleaning products) and your organs of elimination are always working over-time things start to become sluggish, and clogged up.

This causes poor elimination of endocrine disruptors AND poor elimination of the body’s natural hormone by-products. Mix in some stress, insulin dysregulation, poor lifestyle choices, and lack of proper nutrients and you have set the stage for hormonal imbalances, lack of fertility, chronic fatigue, and intense brain fog!

For this exact reason, I strongly believe supporting the body’s natural detoxification systems is an extremely important part of hormonal health.

Now just to clarify.. an effective detox protocol has nothing to do with "cleanses", "restrictions", or "diets".  Instead, it simply focuses on SUPPORTING your main systems of elimination to increase toxin removal and decrease the re-circulation.

Common signs your detox pathways need some attention:

  • Digestive issues / IBS

  • Feeling sluggish / low energy

  • Poor sleep

  • Feeling hungover after minimal alcohol / processed foods

  • Brain fog

  • Bloating / water retention

  • Headaches

  • Skin issues like eczema, ance, rashes, etc.

  • Oil skin

  • Chronic infections

  • Body odor / night sweats

  • Moods swings / anxiety/ depression

  • Dandruff

  • Hair loss / thinning

  • Hormonal symptoms such as fibrocystic breasts, fibroids, intense PMS, heavy periods, irregular periods and symptoms around ovulation

One of the best ways to reset your body and give your detox system a little extra love is to DECREASE the incoming garbage. This means eating real, whole, nutrient-dense foods as often as you can. This will not only take a load off your liver and digestive system but it will also provide your body with the optimal vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients it needs to successfully complete detox functions.
