New Year’s Cocktails for your HORMONES

Let me guess.. you want to be able to have a few drinks with your friends and let loose every now and then (especially on occasions like New Years Eve!) but you are worried about feeling completely awful for days, or sometimes weeks, to follow?

I GET IT.. As part of my healing journey, I had to completely step away from alcohol of any kind for quite a long time. And although now my health is in a place where I am able to have a few drinks every now and then, I still RARELY consume alcohol because of the negative effect it has on my body, health, and hormones.

Before we get to the yummy recipes, I want you to be aware of a few important things when it comes to alcohol and your hormones..

We all know that alcohol is processed through your liver (your body’s main detoxification organ). But the liver ALSO metabolizes estrogen. When we drink alcohol, your liver prioritizes getting it OUT of your system, simply because there is nowhere for the body to store it. This means everything else (including estrogen metabolism) gets put on hold. This can increase the body’s estrogen levels which leads to PMS, painful periods, heavy periods, irregular cycles, fibrocystic breasts, headaches, acne, weight gain, and more!

Of course there are many other factors contributing to high estrogen levels as well but if you experience any of these symptoms, alcohol consumption is definitely not helping you out! (Not to mention the digestive irritation, mineral depletion, and insulin dysregulation it’s also causing).

Now, I am not here to tell you that you “shouldn’t” enjoy a few drinks - I like to enjoy my cocktails every now and then too!  I just want to make you aware of how regular alcohol consumption may be adding to your hormonal symptoms each month so you can begin to choose wisely and in moderation.

Here are a few of my favorite options to sip on when I do choose to consume alcohol that are just a bit more supportive for my body:

Cranberry + Basil Vodka:

  • ¼ cup cranberry juice

  • 1 -2 fresh basil leaves (or rosemary sprig)

  • 2 shot glasses fresh Grapefruit juice

  • Ice

  • Sparkling Water

  • 1 shot glass vodka (I drink Tito's or Ciroc Gluten Free Vodka -  great options for anyone with Celiac Disease) ** optional**

Sparkling Grapefruit Vodka:

**add lemon, lime, and mint to bottom of a pitcher

**add about 5 cups ice

**fill pitcher with water

**add 2 drops of doTERRA grapefruit

**add vodka (optional)

** Mix lightly and set in the fridge - this tastes best when it can sit in the fridge for a few hours before serving!

Guava Goddess Kombucha Highball

  • Sparkling water

  • Guava Goddess flavored kombucha (GT’s brand)

  • Vodka

  • Ice

  • Lime juice

**Mix equal parts sparkling water and kombucha

**Squeeze in some fresh lime

**Add a shot of vodka, or rum of choice

**Pour over ice and garnish with lime wedge

NOTE: You can use any flavor of kombucha - I also like GT’s Mystic Mango for this recipe!

ENJOY!

P.S. If you simply don’t feel like consuming alcohol, make any of these recipes a MOCKTAIL by simply omitting the alcohol!
